The Time We Prayed for Snow

One of my favorite things about being a mom is the way God uses our kids and situations to teach me. This past November, my oldest son, Hayden, was watching the weather with me. It had already began snowing in the northern states, and he asked me when we were going to have snow here-in Texas. Unsure, I told him that I didn’t know if we were going to have snow this year. In his defense, the year before we actually got snow(Texas snow) twice! He was looking forward to it again this year.

I told him we could pray for snow if he wanted to. The moment I said that, Hayden was all in. So for the next few months, every night, we prayed for snow. I’m not talking about a couple of times. Even after Christmas had come and gone, he continued to pray for snow. Anytime the weather got really cold(again for us Texans that means 40 degrees and below), he would ask if it was going to snow. It wasn’t until February 8th . We didn’t know it was going to happen but all of the sudden while we were at his school, it started to sleet. Not quite snow but it was exactly what his little heart wanted. I was like a little kid on Christmas morning. I felt so full of joy because I knew Hayden was going to be so excited. I ran out to his classroom to show him and all the other kids. His smile was so big and he had this look of “I knew it would happen” on his face. Later on, I took him aside and we talked about how God answered his prayer. It was so special to me. This was one of the first things that Hayden had specifically wanted and prayed for. Now, I know God doesn’t go around granting wishes like a genie but I do believe that He sees our hearts and our desires. Even the littlest things matter. I love that God saw Hayden’s heart and met him there.

Through this experience, something that really stuck with me is Hayden’s attitude. Not once did he ever complain, or pout about waiting for snow. He never had a bad attitude, which for a four year old who whines about waiting 3 whole minutes for his turn with a toy, that is BIG! When he would pray, he wasn’t begging God but simply continued to place his request before his Heavenly Father.

God also used this experience to remind me of how FUN He is! Over the past 2 years God has been teaching me about His heart and specifically that He is FUN! He is funny. He is playful. I know it sounds a little strange but He is. I like to think of the picture of our Heavenly Father that my husband gives to my boys. The kids know when he means business and they know he is a safe place to run to but they also know about “tickle and wrestle time”. You know what I’m talking about, right? This famous time when dads get on the floor and all out wrestle and tickle their kids until they are laughing so hard they can’t breathe. (This is  almost always just the boys and daddy but sometimes I am invited to come play too). They are wrestling so hard that all my mom instincts are in high alert but somehow the boys are completely content because they know their daddy is in control. Like any good daddy, God is serious and stern at discipline time but He is also a daddy that wants to make me giggle, LOVES to see me smile, and is genuinely happy to see me happy. He is literally singing over you(and me) because He loves us SO much!

For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. Zephaniah 3:17

This experience was fun! Running over to show Hayden, being so surprised by the sleet, and seeing the kids faces was amazing! So Fun!IMG_9044So I guess, I wanted to write this post to A) share this fun story and brag on my God a little and B) to encourage you. If there is something you are still praying for, Keep Praying. If there is something you are continuing to wait patiently for, Keep Waiting. If you are looking for your Heavenly Daddy to come through for His little girl or little boy, Keeping Looking. He is such a Good Father, Good Shepherd, and Good Guide. He is forever faithful.  AND C) Sometimes we pray for snow with everything we have and get sleet and somehow, the sleet is just as good. He knows exactly what our heart needs. You can trust Him.

I pray this encourages you, inspires you, and gives you hope!

With love,

Ashley

  1. Perfectly said! I’ve been praying to God for something for quite some time and I know that He hears me. I know He desires for me to trust Him and that it will be according to His plan. I am believing; not stressing; and being patient. God listens!!!
